About
Hi! My name is Carly Goddard. I'm a reader and writer from Niagara-on-the-Lake. I consume mainly literary fiction and romance. I am constantly daydreaming, dancing, and camping. I am currently revising my short story, Tiger Girl, which I worked on during my recent mentorship with Ai Jiang. I want to become an author and English teacher.

Writer Bio
Carly Goddard was born in Edmonton, Alberta, but grew up in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. She is an avid reader and writer of literary fiction and romance. Specifically, she enjoys consuming niche literary topics such as the weird, spiritual, naturalistic, metaphysical, and insightful genres that people think about late at night but may never express to others. She has completed her Honours Bachelor of Creative Writing and Publishing at Sheridan College and got accepted in University of Calgary’s Two-Year Bachelor of Education After-Degree program for Fall 2025. She is founder and Vice President of the Creative Writing Corner club at Sheridan. She also has experience working in different caregiving roles in the long term care industry for many years. She is currently revising and extending her literary short story, Tiger Girl, which she worked on during her mentorship with Ai Jiang, into a novella. Her dream is to become an author, English teacher, and homemaker, and to settle down with many dogs and cats. Currently living in North York with her fiance, Carly spends her time daydreaming, learning how to dance, reading/writing with peers, visiting her hometown, and going on camping trips deep in the Canadian wilderness.

Professional Philosophy
My personal philosophy lies in how we should all strive for human connection with anyone without judging. I think we should be curious and interested about each other and approach conversations from a place of empathy. I always assume anyone I meet, no matter how old they are, or what they look like, knows something that I don't. In other words, I can learn something from every interaction. This allows me to connect with others easily and build strong connections with many people. It also changes my perspective or outlook on something in our world. This is what I strive to capture in my writing! Kindness and empathy are a strength, but something anyone can achieve if they practice curious and open listening skills.
My deepest desires and life goals lie in changing people's perspectives of the world through my writing, starting a family of my own, and spreading love and kindness to everyone, regardless of who they are. I’ve always been a deep thinker, and this has manifested in different ways throughout my life. From playing imaginary games, reading plenty of books, making friends with anyone and everyone I meet, and the career paths that I’ve chosen. When I was six or seven years old, I wrote a binder full of homemade chapbooks and I’ve known I wanted to be a writer ever since.
I balance these abstract values with my education and career goals, but try to connect the two. I would love to write, teach, do content creation with a focus on mental health coaching, learn different languages, and practice journalism through work, travel, and connecting with the people I meet, therefore mixing all the things that I love. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Sheridan's CW&P program but I know that it is not the end for me in terms of schooling or writing. I have more desire for growth and knowledge that I need to quench.
Throughout my time working towards my degree in creative writing and publishing, I’ve worked multiple customer service jobs part time. I have experience working as a barista, a care support assistant/personal support aide in long term care, I got promoted to keyholder at my sales job, and became vice president of the creative writing corner club at my school. Despite these roles all being vastly different, they all have one thing in common, which is working and connecting with people. I am a people-person to my core. I can connect with any type of individual and relate to them on a deeper level. My experience across a diverse range of career fields in the GTA has allowed me to connect better with those in my path and improve my dream of writing more authentically.
My BA has helped me learn a lot about speech, linguistics, communication, and researching different cultural topics and I feel that my previous knowledge of these topics will help me go further with language acquisition. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been interested in other cultures, psychology, religions, history, and specifically, language-learning. I took French all throughout high school and I know a bit of German because I have German ancestry, and now I’m currently learning Portuguese. I’m even teaching English to my fiancé who’s from Brazil. All of this, and the fact that I come from a long line of teachers, has lead me to feel that teaching and/or writing careers seem like natural pathways for me to pursue. I have already connected with language-learners through an app called HelloTalk and have started researching the process of language acquisition to help me go further with this interest.
My favourite job so far was working as a Care Support Assistant at a long term care home in the GTA. This job awakened my love of connecting with others and inspiring others to live a life more true to themselves. I’ve continued to look for a career that will allow me to foster this passion ever since. I believe becoming a teacher, caregiving, writer, or a combination of these, will help me harness that feeling and keep me learning new things daily. This may even inspire my writing. I like weird topics, conversations about spiritualism and nature. I am passionate about stories and the metaphysical world. I love having meaningful and thoughtful conversations with strangers and friends. Talking with people about these topics allow you to see the raw openness of the human experience in its entirety. I want to tell people everywhere how liberating it feels to get these stories out to the universe! There is so much division and hate in the world that I think sometimes people forget that we are all the same and have the same thoughts/desires about life. Hopefully, through my writing, future career pathways, and my own personal journey as a homemaker will inspire others. I want to inspire people to think more deeply about life and look at the world in a new perspective.
