Biography
About Me Continued...
My personal values and philosophy lies in how we should all strive for human connection, love, and understanding without judgment. I think we should be curious and interested about each other and approach conversations from a place of empathy. I always assume everyone I meet, no matter how old they are, or what they look like, knows something that I don't. In other words, I can learn something from every interaction. This allows me to connect with others easily and build strong connections with many different kinds of people. It has also changed my perspectives and outlook on different things in the world.

Throughout my time working towards my degree in creative writing and publishing, I’ve worked multiple customer service jobs part time. I have experience working as a barista, an early childhood educator, a care support assistant/personal support aide in long term care, I got promoted to keyholder at my sales job, and became vice president of the creative writing corner club at my school. Despite these roles all being vastly different, they all have one thing in common, which is working and connecting with people.

Carly Dal Secco was born in Edmonton, Alberta, but grew up in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. She is an avid reader and writer of literary fiction and romance. She enjoys escaping into romantasy books, and consuming niche literary topics that deal with the weird, spiritual, naturalistic, and metaphysical as well as pieces that express the late-night thoughts that people don’t share with others. She completed her Honours Bachelor of Creative Writing and Publishing at Sheridan College in 2025, and plans to begin a full time job in a new position, as well as possible further education to become a teacher in 2026. She is a founder of the Creative Writing Corner club at Sheridan College. She also has many years’ worth of experience working in different caregiving roles in the long-term care industry, such as a Care Support Assistant for Sienna Senior Living. Currently, she is revising and extending her literary short story, Tiger Girl, that she worked on during her mentorship with Chinese-Canadian author, Ai Jiang. Her dream is to become an author and homemaker who eventually lives on a farm with many pets. Right now, Carly moved to Okotoks, Alberta with her husband. She splits her time between work, reading and writing, dancing, working on art projects, and going on camping trips deep in the Canadian wilderness.

Writer Philosophy
Throughout history humans have told stories. Whether these stories were told verbally through music, sonnets, plays, and poetry, or through the written word, books have had incredible impacts on the world. Without books, I believe, as do many other readers, that I would be a completely different person. This is proof to me that writing is an expression of the soul.
One of my deepest desires and life goals is to change people's perspectives of the world through my writing. I’ve always been a deep thinker, and this has manifested in different ways throughout my life. From playing imaginary games, reading plenty of books, making friends with anyone and everyone I meet, and the career paths that I’ve chosen. When I was six or seven years old, I wrote a binder full of homemade chapbooks and I’ve known I wanted to be a writer ever since.
I am a people-person to my core. I can connect with any type of individual and relate to them on a deeper level, so naturally becoming an author is the path that I’ve always wanted to pursue. My experience across a diverse range of career fields in the GTA and the Niagara region has allowed me to connect better with those in my path and improve my dream of writing more authentically. My favourite job so far was working as a Care Support Assistant at a long term care home. This job awakened my love of connecting with others and inspiring others to live a life more true to themselves.
I believe we should all strive for human connection with anyone, regardless of differences, without judging. I apply this belief to my life and practice it daily. This openness and authenticity is what I strive to capture in my writing. Kindness and empathy are a strength, but something that anyone can achieve if they practice curious and open listening skills.
I like reading/writing niche literary topics such as spiritualism, nature, and stories that examine the metaphysical world. I love having meaningful and thoughtful conversations with strangers and friends to inspire my writing. Talking with people about these topics allows you to see the raw openness of the human experience in its entirety. I want to tell people everywhere how liberating it feels to get these stories out to the universe!
I balance these abstract values with my career goals of becoming a successful author, but I try to connect the two. I would love to write, teach, connect with, and learn from the people I meet, therefore mixing all the things that I love. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Sheridan's CW&P program but I know that it is not the end of my writing journey. My BA has taught me a lot about speech, linguistics, communication, and researching different topics in the publishing industry. I feel that my knowledge of these topics will help me go further in a career.
Reading to your children, or even having books present in your child's home, is proven to incite empathy in their brains, and give them a higher statistical chance of being academically successful later on in life. As a worker of multiple caregiving roles including working with kids, this is a core reason that I am dedicated to writing good literature. I value writing about real topics and themes that are genuine in nature. I strive to be a versatile writer and enjoy writing across different forms and audiences. I apply my values of authenticity across all genres of literature, my favourite being literary fiction, fantasy-romance, and children's literature.
My approach to writing is often to get my massive storm of ideas onto paper. Usually this means that my first drafts are lengthy and rough. I never outline my stories because I tend to get ideas that contribute better to my story as I write, and I add more details afterwards. This approach to writing often means that my strengths lie in my characters, voice, and my fast-paced style of writing. Overall, my goal is to be a well-rounded author, highlighting genuine stories, and authentic voices.
I’m currently revising and extending my literary short story titled, Tiger Girl, into a novella. I worked on this project during my mentorship with Chinese-Canadian author, Ai Jiang. This story is about overcoming physical and mental trauma through romantic explorations. An excerpt of a longer piece that I wrote titled, Obsessive Compulsive Demonic Possession, is published in Oneiros: An Anthology, published in June 2025. I’m currently writing the first draft of a literary novel/short story collection titled, Sundown, following different residents in a long term care facility. Additionally, I hope to publish a short story collection written in different unique POVs, a romantasy series, and childrens picture books in the future.
There is so much division and hate in the world that I think sometimes people forget that we are all the same and have the same thoughts and desires of life. Books allow me to think more deeply and look at the world in a new perspective. Hopefully, through my writing, I will inspire others to do the same.
